METTA Dāna Foundation: Bridging the Education Gap

At the METTA Dāna Foundation (MDF), our work is rooted in the belief that “The child is the father of the man.” We envision a world where no child suffers or dies from non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The alarming reality is that NCDs are on the rise, fueled by rapidly changing social, economic, and structural factors, leading to unhealthy lifestyle practices that contribute to a crisis claiming the lives of approximately 17 million people prematurely each year.

While detection, screening, treatment, and palliative care are crucial components in the fight against NCDs, education for prevention is undeniably the cornerstone of success. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3.4 set an ambitious target to reduce premature deaths from NCDs by one-third by 2030. However, current trends show that we are far from achieving this goal. It is time to take action and turn “Words into Action,” guided by our beloved Swamiji’s blessings.

Did You Know ??

The NCD Crisis: A Global Challenge
  1. 41 million people die from NCDs each year, accounting for three-quarters of all deaths globally.
  2. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) lead NCD mortality, followed by cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes.
  3. India bears a significant burden, with approximately 6.5 million (~70%) NCD deaths reported recently.
  4. Low- and middle-income countries face staggering economic losses due to NCDs, estimated to exceed $500 billion annually. In India alone, the projected economic loss from NCDs will reach $3.55 trillion between 2012 and 2030.
  5. Investments in proven NCD interventions can yield substantial economic benefits—$1 spent can generate $7 in increased economic development or reduced healthcare costs by 2030.
  6. More than 720 000 people die due to suicide every year making this the third leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds. Nearly three-fourth of the population of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.
